Looking for Bell County Czechs

Genealogists Danny Leshikar of Liberty, Missouri and Richard Lesikar of Granbury, Texas hosted a genealogy event at the Museum October 6, 2016.

Vintage photos of Czech public and church schools in Bell County were enlarged and set out for participants to search for known faces in the images.

Danny Leshikar presently has a database of more than 81,000 entries which includes names, information and photographs. He and Richard Lesikar use this information to build family trees at no cost.

(The two men are cousins. Their last names are an example of how Czechs and immigration officials found ways to deal with the soft "S" (hacek) in the English language. Danny's family added an "H" and continued to pronounce it the same. Richard's family changed the pronunciation to English "S" and left the spelling alone.)

“We will help people begin building a family tree or add to their own information,” said Richard Lesikar. “We will not post this information to social media or on websites such as Ancestry.com,” he said.

“We are blessed that some Czech genealogists such as Edmund Hejl, Albert Blaha, Jim and Mildred (Skrabanek) Hejl had the foresight to gather, translate and publish information of our Czech heritage,” said Richard Lesikar. “These people, who are now all deceased, helped lay the foundation for Danny’s work.”
